Quick Checklist for Oil Transfer Pumps on Lube Trailers

Your Taylor Pump & Lift lube trailer is out there every day, fueling excavators, servicing loaders, and keeping equipment running. At the center of that system is your oil transfer pump (also called the stub pump or dispense pump), moving oil from the storage tank through the hose reel and meter to deliver a clean, consistent flow on site.

When your crew pulls up, they expect the lube trailer to work the first time, every time. With a few quick checks built into your routine, that’s exactly what happens. You invested in equipment built for reliable field performance: Graco and Alemite pumps designed for consistent flow, retracting hose reels that handle daily use, and multi-compartment tanks that keep fluids organized. Whether you’re running new oil, waste oil, or grease, each pump type has its own maintenance needs.

These are the five practical checks we walk through with every customer, the same ones that keep equipment running strong season after season.

1. Air Compressor Maintenance: Protect Your Oil Transfer System

Your air compressor powers everything on your Taylor Pump & Lift trailer: the air-driven oil pumps, grease pumps, and waste oil diaphragm pumps that move product through the hose reels and meters. Keeping that air clean and dry protects your pumps, meters, and fittings downstream.

The 30-Second Daily Check

Make this part of your morning routine, right alongside checking tire pressure and fluid levels.

What to do:

  • Open the drain petcock at the bottom of your compressor tank
  • Let the moisture drain out completely
  • Close the valve once it runs clear
  • Best done first thing in the morning or at the end of the shift

What you’re looking for:

  • Light water discharge: Normal – your system is working as designed
  • Heavy moisture daily: Consider adding an automatic dump system (pneumatic or electric timer-based options available)

Daily draining takes less time than a quick walk-around PM check and keeps every pump running at peak performance.

Once your compressor’s delivering clean, dry air, verify your pumps are running at the settings that give you the longest service life.

2. Oil Transfer Pump Maintenance: The Right PSI Settings for Your Taylor Pump & Lift System

Your Taylor Pump & Lift trailer came from our shop with each pump dialed to its optimal pressure setting. Keeping pumps at these settings, even under deadline pressure, protects your investment and extends equipment life.

Your trailer runs on a mix of pump systems, and each one performs best within its designed range. Here’s what to look for:

New oil pumps (Graco, Alemite):

  • Optimal range: 40-80 PSI
  • Designed for efficient flow at sustainable pressure

Diaphragm pumps for waste oil (Yamada, Alemite):

  • Optimal range: 30-60 PSI
  • Built for lower pressures than new oil pumps
  • Properly maintained = approximately 3 years of reliable service

Grease pumps:

  • Optimal range: 80-100 PSI
  • Higher viscosity requires greater drive pressure; keep within rated limits to avoid seal wear

Now that you know the target ranges, here’s how to verify your system is set correctly.

The Quick Pressure Verification (60 Seconds)

Before you roll out, take a minute to confirm each pump is dialed in where it should be.

What to do:

  • Check the gauge on each pump system before leaving the yard
  • Verify settings match the optimal ranges above
  • Listen for smooth, consistent operation
  • Note any adjustments in your maintenance log

When pumps run within their designed range, valve components work as intended, opening and closing smoothly, creating consistent flow, and delivering optimal service.

With pressure settings confirmed, check the delivery system that gets fluids from the pump to the equipment.

3. Lube Trailer Pump System: Daily Hose and Reel Checks

Your Taylor Pump & Lift trailer’s hoses and reels are the linchpin of your fluid delivery system. A quick daily visual keeps them working safely and reliably.

Daily Visual Check (60 Seconds Per Reel)

A quick walk-around catches wear before it turns into leaks or downtime.

What to inspect:

  • Hoses: Look for cracks, worn spots, splitting, or kinks
  • Coupler fittings: Check both ends for tight, leak-free connections
  • Swivel assembly: Quick look inside the reel hub to confirm everything’s dry
  • Reel retraction: Test the tension – should retract smoothly

Replace when you spot:

  • Visible cracks or splits in the hose body
  • Soft spots or bulging
  • Fittings that weep even after proper tightening
  • Outer layer showing wear that exposes inner reinforcement

Monthly Maintenance

Lubricate the latch pawls and springs on your retracting hose reels once a month. This takes two minutes per reel and keeps the retraction smooth. Keep hose ends capped or elevated between uses to prevent debris from entering your oil transfer pump.

Your hoses are in good shape! Now make sure your filters are keeping contaminants away from pump components.

4. Oil Transfer Pump Maintenance: Filter and Strainer Cleaning

Your Taylor Pump & Lift trailer’s has filtration designed to protect pump components and keep fluid delivery clean. Regular filter maintenance keeps everything flowing smoothly.

Two Key Maintenance Points

Your filtration system has two checkpoints that protect expensive pump components and keep the flow consistent.

Inline meter filters:

  • Purpose: Keep meters accurate and protect downstream components
  • How often: Clean at least annually, sooner if flow slows
  • Easy to spot: Flow decreases even though PSI is correct

Y-strainers (waste oil systems):

  • Purpose: Catch debris before it reaches your diaphragm pump
  • What they capture: Metal shavings, leaves, sand, site debris
  • How often: At least annually, more frequently in dusty construction environments

Simple Cleaning Process

Here’s how to clear a clogged filter and get flow back to normal:

What to do:

  • Remove the strainer screen or filter element
  • Inspect for debris buildup
  • Clean with solvent and dry with compressed air
  • Reinstall and verify the flow returns to normal

If your pump seems slower (despite correct PSI), check the filter first. Clean it, reassemble, test. Most times, flow returns to normal.

With filters clean, let’s bring all these checks together into a quick daily routine.

5. Lube Trailer Checklist: Quick Pre-Job Confirmation

This quick checklist confirms everything’s ready to perform exactly the way your crew expects.

Before You Leave the Yard (2–10 Minutes)

Pull all five checks together into one quick routine before your trailer hits the road:

  • Compressor: Drained and ready?
  • Pump pressure: Verified at optimal PSI?
  • Hoses: Visually checked and in good shape?
  • Reels: Retracting smoothly?
  • Filters and strainers: Clean and clear?
  • Tanks: Filled, labeled, and secured?

Time investment: A few minutes (plan 2–10, depending on how your trailer is set up)

What you get: Confidence that your equipment is ready

When starting in cold weather, let the system warm briefly before demanding high volume. Cold fluid flows slowly; a short warm-up helps your Alemite and Graco pumps deliver optimal flow.

Ninety seconds in the yard confirms everything’s dialed in. Your crew arrives on site knowing the equipment is ready.

Keep Your Equipment Ready & Your Crew Working

These five checkpoints take under five minutes and give you confidence that your oil transfer pump and lube trailer are ready for the day ahead. Daily compressor drains, proper PSI settings, clean filters, and quick hose inspections keep your Taylor Pump & Lift’s trailer performing at its best.
